FeuxFrance, independent observatory of vegetation fires in France.

FeuxFrance brings together satellite detections and declared fires in metropolitan France since 2012, and sets them against the current season.

The aim is simple: make readable what public data already says, without forcing it. Where it is burning this year, whether that is unusual, and which areas burn year after year.

The data is public and free. The work is cleaning it, removing the industrial flares that saturate the maps, and placing the figures next to what they mean. The methodology is detailed here.

FeuxFrance is published by 5000.dev, on its own resources: no public funding, no advertising, no third-party commission. The site has no connection with the Observatoire des forêts françaises, which is a French government service.

Cookies

There is no banner on this site, and that is not an oversight: there is nothing to accept. No tracker, no ad network, no sharing with a third party.

Audience measurement goes through a Plausible instance we host ourselves. It sets no cookie and builds no profile: it counts page views, not people.

Only one cookie exists, _feux_france_session. It is strictly technical: it carries the token that protects the site's two forms (report an error, follow a municipality) against requests forged from another site. It contains no identifier and no history, it is out of reach of JavaScript, and it disappears when the browser closes. A cookie strictly necessary for the service requested does not require consent, which is why we do not ask you for it.

Only one thing is kept in your browser besides that cookie: the layers you have ticked or unticked on the maps, so you find them again from one page to the next. That is local storage, not a cookie: it is never sent to our servers, and clearing the site's data erases it.

Reuse

The figures published here can be reused, provided you cite the original source (NASA FIRMS or BDIFF), the period, and the fact that satellite hotspots are not declared fires.
